Rusks are a delicious South African tradition, inherited from their Dutch forefathers who call it Beskuit. They are similar to a wider European treat. In Italy they are called Biscotti and in Germany, Zwieback. they are balls of dough made with yeast or baking powder and are packed into bread loaf tins and are baked in an oven. These balls rise when baked and are then separated and put back into the oven, at a low temperature for a couple of hours, with the door open to dry out. The recipe for these traditional treats can vary from buttermilk and muesli, to all-bran and are even made with rasins. Rusks are best enjoyed dunked in a steaming hot cup of coffee or tea.
